A German Shepherd named Ziggy was diagnosed with a distal radio-ulnar fracture. Initially, he underwent metal osteosynthesis at another clinic using a single T-shaped plate. However, due to excessive physical activity, the plate fractured.
After a comprehensive evaluation and additional radiographic imaging at our clinic, we proceeded with fracture fixation using double locking titanium plates. This approach is particularly effective for treating complex and comminuted fractures. Locking plates create a highly stable, self-supporting construct that significantly reduces the risk of implant overload and increases the likelihood of proper bone healing. Titanium, thanks to its excellent biocompatibility and high durability, is an ideal material for such complex surgical cases.
The surgery was successfully performed by our clinic’s Chief Veterinarian and Head of the Surgicial Department, Dr. Lasha-Giorgi Japaridze, who has extensive experience in managing complex orthopedic traumas. He was assisted by veterinarian Barbare Kurtsikidze. The anesthesia was professionally managed by veterinary anesthesiologist Natia Robakidze.
Revision surgeries are typically more time-consuming and technically demanding than initial procedures; however, Ziggy’s rehabilitation is progressing very well.
The post is accompanied by radiographic images illustrating the condition of the bone before surgery and the successful fixation with double titanium plates afterward.
