Dalmatian Nancy Diagnosed with Parvoviral Enteritis

09 June 2025

A Dalmatian named Nancy was brought to the Veterinarium Clinic for a general clinical examination and gastrointestinal parasite treatment. During the initial evaluation, the clinic’s veterinary clinician specializing in internal medicine, Salome Tsabadze, observed the presence of ectoparasites (ticks) on the patient’s skin. Shortly after arriving at the clinic, Nancy developed diarrhea.

Considering the clinical signs and in order to rule out infectious diseases, the veterinarian prescribed a comprehensive diagnostic workup, which included:

  • Abdominal ultrasound
  • Complete blood count (CBC)
  • Blood biochemistry profile (including liver enzyme evaluation)
  • Electrolyte panel
  • Test for four infectious diseases: ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, Lyme disease, and dirofilariasis
  • Test for three additional diseases: giardiasis, parvovirus, and coronavirus

Based on the diagnostic findings, Nancy was diagnosed with canine parvoviral enteritis. In addition, elevated liver enzyme levels were detected.

In accordance with the diagnosis,  Salome developed an integrated treatment plan, which included:

  • Specific symptomatic and supportive therapy for parvoviral infection
  • Intravenous fluid therapy (infusion therapy)
  • Hepatoprotective therapy to support normal liver function
  • Antioxidant and immunomodulatory treatment

The complete treatment course lasted approximately 2 weeks, during which Nancy spent 5 days under intensive care at the clinic.

Today, fully recovered, Nancy returned to the clinic with her loving owners - bringing us a beautiful bouquet of pink flowers.
