Veterinarium’s August Surgical Adventure 

August was an especially remarkable month for Veterinarium. Our team performed a wide range of complex surgical procedures, some of which are currently performed only at our clinic in Georgia, while others were carried out for the first time in the region.

Surgeries performed in August included:

• ⁠Surgical repair of a distal humeral fracture - 1 procedure
• Patellar groove replacement combined with CCWO (cranial closing wedge osteotomy) and DFO (distal femoral osteotomy) - 1 procedure
• ⁠Surgical treatment of cervical intervertebral disc herniation - 2 procedures
• ⁠TPLO - 2 procedures. TPLO, or tibial plateau levelling osteotomy, is an advanced surgical technique used to treat cranial cruciate ligament injuries. It restores stability to the knee joint by altering the biomechanics of the tibia
• Total hip replacement using the KYON Zurich Cementless prosthetic system - 2 procedures, performed for the first time in the region
• ⁠Resection of a large-intestinal tumour - 1 procedure
• Thyroid gland tumor resection - 1 procedure
• Open reduction of coxofemoral luxation using toggle pin method - 1 procedure
• ⁠Femoral head and neck excision - 3 procedures
• ⁠Laparoscopic gastric biopsy and drainage of a lymph-node abscess - 1 procedure

All the surgical procedures listed above were performed by Veterinarium’s Head Veterinarian and surgeon, Dr. Lasha-Giorgi Japaridze. Anaesthesia was managed by the clinic’s anaesthesiologist and cardiologist, Natia Robakidze. The surgeon was assisted by Mariam Kapanadze and Luka Ghlonti, master’s students at the School of Veterinary Medicine of the Agricultural University of Georgia.
