Dr. Lasha-Giorgi Japaridze's visit to Clinica Veterinaria Vezzoni

07 July 2026

Veterinarium's Head Veterinarian and Agricultural University PhD candidate, Dr. Lasha-Giorgi Japaridze, will travel to Italy from July 16 to 29 for his second visit to Clinica Veterinaria Vezzoni, the veterinary referral hospital founded by Dr. Aldo Vezzoni.

During the visit, he will work closely with Dr. Aldo Vezzoni, founder and Chief Veterinary Surgeon of one of the world's leading veterinary orthopedic centers, on:

  • his PhD research project
  • a new scientific publication

As part of the visit, Dr. Japaridze will also undertake the final certification examination for the KYON Cementless Total Hip Replacement (THR) System.

KYON is a Swiss veterinary orthopedic company internationally recognized for developing innovative technologies for joint replacement and fracture management in small animals. Established through close collaboration between veterinary surgeons and biomedical engineers, the company has pioneered several advanced orthopedic systems. Among its most significant innovations is the Zurich Cementless Total Hip Replacement (THR) System, which has transformed canine total hip replacement by enabling secure implant fixation and long term stability without the use of bone cement.

Upon successful completion of the certification examination, Dr. Lasha-Giorgi Japaridze will become the first KYON certified veterinarian in the South Caucasus for this procedure, while Veterinarium will become the first veterinary hospital in the region to offer Total Hip Replacement (THR).

Additional Information:

1. Dr. Lasha-Giorgi Japaridze's PhD research is entitled "Stress Shielding of the Femur Following Zurich Cementless Total Hip Arthroplasty in Dogs." A key component of the project is collaboration with Clinica Veterinaria Vezzoni, an internationally recognized center of excellence in veterinary orthopedic surgery, renowned for its extensive research capabilities and standardized diagnostic protocols.

2. The scientific advisor for the project is Dr. Aldo Vezzoni, founder of Clinica Veterinaria Vezzoni and an internationally recognized authority in veterinary total hip replacement. Dr. Vezzoni has performed more than 5 000 THR procedures, representing one of the highest case volumes achieved by any veterinary surgeon worldwide. Dr. Aldo Vezzoni's CV is available here: https://www.vezzoni.it/.../Aldo_CV_Long_Jan_2024_updated...

3. The research is of particular national and regional significance because Total Hip Replacement (THR) has not yet been introduced in Georgia or anywhere else in the South Caucasus. Successful implementation of this procedure would represent a major advancement in veterinary orthopedic care across the region.

4. Dr. Lasha-Giorgi Japaridze first visited Clinica Veterinaria Vezzoni in September 2024 at the invitation of Dr. Aldo Vezzoni. During this visit, Dr. Vezzoni and Dr. Japaridze defined the direction of the future PhD research project and developed its core research concept.

5. Obtaining certification for the KYON Cementless Total Hip Replacement System is a rigorous, multi stage process requiring successful completion of the KYON Educational Pathway. With the support of the Kakha Bendukidze Knowledge Foundation, Dr. Japaridze has already successfully completed two stages of the program, including the KYON International Surgical Workshop, held in Boston, USA, in August 2025. The final and most demanding stage of the pathway, the licensing examination, will take place during his visit to Italy.
