Thoracoscopic removal of a foreign body
03 July 2026
2-year-old mixed-breed Laima was brought to Veterinarium with a foreign body in the thoracic cavity - a bamboo skewer measuring approximately 15 cm in length.
A computed tomography scan performed at Vet CT, located on the Kakha Bendukidze Campus, revealed that the foreign body was lodged adjacent to the left lung lobes, extending between the 2nd and 11th ribs.
The foreign body was successfully removed by our Head Veterinarian, Dr. Lasha-Giorgi Japaridze, using a thoracoscopic approach. Thoracoscopy is a modern, minimally invasive surgical technique that allows procedures to be performed through small incisions, reducing surgical trauma and postoperative pain while promoting a faster recovery.
The foreign body was successfully extracted through two 5 mm thoracoscopic ports.
Anaesthesia was managed by veterinary anaesthesiologist Natia Robakidze, while the surgeon was assisted by Mari Kapanadze.
